Balayage in Washington, DC
Soft, sun-kissed, hand-painted color — perfected in France, refined in Washington.
Balayage isn't a trend at Kiss Salon. It's a technique our founder learned at its source — in France, in 1987 — and has spent nearly four decades refining. Today, our team of Master Stylists creates custom, hand-painted color that's natural, dimensional, and built to grow out beautifully. Whether you want a soft "lived-in" finish, an expensive blonde, or a low-maintenance brunette refresh, we'll design a balayage that fits your hair, your skin tone, and your life.
What Is Balayage?
Balayage is a French word meaning "to sweep" — and it describes exactly how the color is applied. Instead of using foils, your stylist hand-paints lightener directly onto select strands of your hair, creating soft, gradual transitions of color rather than harsh stripes.
The result is dimensional, natural-looking color that mimics the way the sun naturally lightens hair. Because the color is painted (not packed in foil), the highlights blend more softly, the regrowth is gentler, and the overall effect is more organic.
It's the technique behind the looks you see on Instagram and on the runway — expensive blonde, bronde, lived-in brunette, money piece, sun-kissed — all variations built on the same foundation: hand-painted, custom-placed color.
Why French Balayage Is Different
Balayage was developed in Paris in the 1970s, and the French tradition treats it as an art form rather than a service. The differences come down to four things:
Placement. A French-trained colorist studies your face, your part, and how you naturally style your hair before painting a single strand. The lightness is placed where the light naturally hits — not in a uniform pattern across the head.
Saturation. French balayage uses less product per strand, with deliberate variation. The result is softer, more dimensional, and more natural than the heavily saturated "block" balayage common at chain salons.
Toning. Toning is treated as a second creative step, not an afterthought. We build custom tones using Goldwell, L'Oréal Professionnel, and Redken to give you the exact warmth, coolness, or neutrality you want.
Finish. Every appointment ends with a precision cut and blow-dry — because color only looks as good as the cut underneath it.
Our founder, Jean Claude Macrez, trained in this tradition in France in 1987 and has taught it to every stylist on our team.
Who Is Balayage For?
Balayage is one of our most-requested services because it works for almost everyone. It's especially ideal for clients who want:
-
Dimension without harsh lines — soft, blended highlights instead of obvious stripes
-
Lower maintenance — most clients return every 3 to 4 months instead of every 6 weeks
-
A natural finish — color that looks like you spent the summer at the beach, not in the salon chair
-
A custom look — built around your skin tone, eye color, hair texture, and lifestyle
We work with every starting color, from very dark to platinum, and every hair texture, from fine and straight to thick and curly. Each balayage is custom-designed at your consultation.
What to Expect at Your Balayage Appointment
Every balayage at Kiss Salon begins with a real conversation. We want to understand the look you're hoping for, your maintenance preferences, your hair history, and what's realistic given your hair's current condition. Bringing reference photos is welcome and helpful.
Here's what your appointment looks like:
Consultation (10–15 minutes). We discuss your goals, examine your hair's history and condition, and design a custom plan together. We'll be honest about what's achievable in one session versus what may take more than one visit.
Painting (60 minutes). Your stylist hand-paints lightener onto carefully selected strands. The exact time depends on your hair's length, density, and how much dimension you want.
Processing (20–45 minutes). While the lightener develops, you'll relax with refreshments. We monitor every few minutes to make sure the lift is exactly where it needs to be.
Toning (20–30 minutes). A custom-blended toner is applied to bring your highlights to the perfect tone — warm honey, cool ash, neutral champagne, whatever you've chosen.
Cut and style (30–60 minutes). A precision cut, conditioning treatment, and blow-dry to finish.
Total time: Plan for 3 to 5 hours depending on your hair. We always quote the time accurately when you book so there are no surprises.
Balayage Pricing in Washington, DC
Balayage at Kiss Salon starts at $250 and is quoted at consultation based on:
-
Hair length (chin-length vs. mid-back vs. waist-length)
-
Density and thickness (more hair = more product, more time)
-
Starting color (going from dark brown to bright blonde takes more work than refreshing existing balayage)
-
Goal complexity (a subtle face frame is different from an all-over transformation)
For most new clients, a full balayage with toner, cut, and blow-dry runs $300–$550. Color corrections or major transformations (very dark to very light) are quoted separately and may require multiple sessions for the healthiest result.
We always quote before we begin. No surprises.
How to Maintain Your Balayage Between Appointments
A great balayage should still look beautiful three to four months after your appointment. Here's how to make sure yours does:
-
Use sulfate-free, color-safe shampoo and conditioner. We recommend Oribe and Milbon — both available at the salon.
-
Wash less often. Two to three times a week is plenty. Use dry shampoo between washes.
-
Wash with cool water. Hot water opens the cuticle and lets color fade faster.
-
Use a weekly hair mask. Lightened hair needs extra moisture and protein. We'll recommend the right one for your hair type.
-
Heat protect every time. Always use a heat protectant before hot tools.
-
Schedule a gloss between balayage sessions. A gloss appointment 6–8 weeks after your balayage refreshes the tone and adds shine. It's the secret to balayage that looks salon-fresh for months.
-
Protect from chlorine, salt water, and the sun. All three accelerate fading.
Every Kiss Salon client leaves with a custom home-care plan tailored to their hair.
Frequently Asked Questions About Balayage
How long does balayage last?
Most clients return every 3 to 4 months for a full balayage refresh, with an optional gloss appointment in between. Because the color is hand-painted and grows out softly, balayage has the longest-lasting look of any color service.
Can I get balayage on dark hair?
Yes. Some of our most beautiful balayages are on dark brunette and black hair. The key is realistic goals and healthy lifting — going from very dark to very light may take more than one session, and we'll always be honest about what's achievable in one visit.
Is balayage damaging?
Done well, balayage is one of the gentler color services because the lightener is placed away from the scalp and not packed into foil. We use professional-grade lighteners and bonding additives to protect your hair throughout the process.
Balayage vs. highlights — what's the difference?
Foil highlights create more uniform, saturated lift from root to ends. Balayage creates softer, more dimensional, lived-in color that's lighter at the ends and natural toward the roots. Many clients combine both — that's a service we call "foil-ayage" — for a custom finish.
Can men get balayage?
Absolutely. We do balayage for men of all hair lengths.
How do I prepare for my balayage appointment?
Come with hair washed within the past 24–48 hours (clean but not freshly washed). Bring 2–3 reference photos if you have a specific look in mind. Plan for the appointment to take 3–5 hours.
Do you offer consultations before booking?
Yes — complimentary consultations for any color service. Book through our online booking or call 202-293-1200.
