French Blending

Our signature gray-blending color service. Soft, natural, and beautifully unobvious.

There was a time when the only options for gray hair were cover it completely or let it grow out unmanaged. French Blending is the third option — and it's the one most of our clients have been waiting for.

It's a soft, custom-blended color technique that softens, breaks up, and naturally integrates your gray rather than masking it. The result is a finish that looks like the most beautiful version of your natural hair — luminous, dimensional, low-maintenance, and unmistakably you. No harsh root line. No flat single tone. No six-week panic when the regrowth shows.

French Blending is a Kiss Salon signature service, designed and refined by our founder Jean Claude Macrez, drawing on nearly four decades of French color training.

What Is French Blending?

French Blending is a custom-painted, multi-tone color technique designed specifically for hair with gray. Instead of saturating your hair with a single base color, your colorist hand-blends two to four custom tones through your hair using a combination of techniques borrowed from balayage, gloss, and traditional French color.

The goal isn't to hide the gray. The goal is to integrate it — softening the contrast, adding warmth or coolness, and creating dimension that makes your hair look effortlessly natural and fresh.

You'll still see your gray. It'll just look like the prettiest version of itself.

Why French Blending Is Different From Traditional Gray Coverage

Traditional gray coverage is built on a single principle: deposit one solid base color over your hair to make the gray invisible. It works — but it has limitations:

  • A flat, single-tone finish that can look unnatural

  • Visible regrowth every 4–6 weeks

  • A maintenance schedule that becomes a chore

  • A look that often ages clients rather than refreshing them

French Blending takes a different approach. By using multiple custom-blended tones and painting them with intention, your colorist creates dimension rather than coverage. Your gray becomes part of the design — adding sparkle, brightness, and natural movement — instead of being treated as a flaw to hide.

The visual difference is striking. The maintenance difference is even bigger.

Who Is French Blending For?

French Blending is ideal if you:

  • Have 20% to 70% gray and want a softer, more natural approach than full coverage

  • Are transitioning out of full coverage and ready for something lower maintenance

  • Are growing out to your natural gray and want a beautiful in-between phase

  • Want to embrace your gray while still adding dimension, brightness, or warmth

  • Are tired of the every-four-weeks root touch-up cycle

  • Want a finish that looks expensive, considered, and contemporary

  • Want a color that grows out without a visible "line"

It works beautifully on every hair color — brunettes, blondes, redheads, and silvers — and on every hair texture. We customize each French Blending service around your specific gray pattern, your skin tone, and the look you want.

It's also one of the most-requested services among men who want to soften gray rather than fully color it.

What to Expect at Your French Blending Appointment

Every French Blending service begins with a real consultation. We want to understand your goals, study your gray pattern, and design a custom plan together.

Consultation (15–20 minutes). We'll discuss what you want, look at your current color and gray distribution, talk about maintenance, and design your custom French Blending plan. Bringing reference photos is welcome.

Custom blending (30–60 minutes). Your colorist hand-blends two to four custom formulas — selecting tones, lifts, and depths designed specifically for your hair.

Application (60–90 minutes). Your colorist hand-paints the formulas through your hair using French Blending technique — placing color with intention through the gray rather than saturating uniformly.

Processing (20–40 minutes). Time to relax with refreshments while the color develops.

Tone, gloss, and finish (30–45 minutes). A custom toner or gloss seals in the look, balances the dimension, and adds the signature soft, luminous finish. Cut and style follow.

Total time: Plan for 3 to 4 hours. We always quote accurately when you book.

French Blending Pricing in Washington, DC

French Blending starts at $350 and is quoted at consultation based on:

  • Hair length and density

  • Percentage and pattern of gray

  • Number of custom tones used

  • Whether you're transitioning from previous color or starting fresh

Most French Blending appointments at Kiss Salon range $350–$600, with maintenance appointments every 8–12 weeks. Many clients also add a refresher gloss between full appointments to keep tone fresh — typically $80–$120.

We always quote precisely at consultation. No surprises.

How to Maintain Your French Blending Color

Because French Blending grows out softly and naturally, your maintenance is significantly easier than traditional color. To keep it looking its best:

  • Use sulfate-free, color-safe shampoo and conditioner. We recommend Oribe and Milbon — both available at the salon.

  • Wash less often. Two to three times a week is plenty. Use dry shampoo between washes.

  • Wash with cool water. Hot water opens the cuticle and accelerates fading.

  • Use a weekly hair mask to keep tone vibrant and ends nourished.

  • Use a purple or blue toning shampoo once a week to keep your gray bright and free of yellow or brassy tones (we'll recommend the right one for your hair).

  • Schedule a gloss refresh every 6–8 weeks between full appointments to keep tone perfect.

  • Always heat-protect before any hot tool.

  • Protect from chlorine and sun, which can pull cool tones warm.

Every Kiss Salon client leaves with a custom home-care plan tailored to their hair and their French Blending color.

Why French Blending Is a Kiss Salon Signature

French Blending is built on three principles our founder has spent four decades refining:

Color should look natural. Hair that's clearly been "colored over" is dated. Modern luxury color works with the hair you have — including the gray.

Maintenance should be reasonable. No client should feel chained to a six-week appointment cycle just to look themselves.

Gray is beautiful. It deserves to be designed for, not designed around.

We've been doing variations of this technique at Kiss Salon for years. Now we're formalizing it as our signature service — with a defined approach, custom formulation method, and dedicated consultation process.

If you've been thinking about embracing your gray more gracefully, this is the service built for that decision.
