Hair Color Correction in Washington, DC

When color goes wrong, our Master Colorists make it right.

A bad color can shake your confidence. Maybe a box dye turned green. Maybe highlights came out brassy. Maybe a previous salon pulled too much warmth, left you with banding, or took you somewhere your hair was never going to go in one session. Whatever happened, we've seen it — and we can almost certainly fix it.

Color correction is one of Kiss Salon's specialties. Our founder, Jean Claude Macrez, trained in France in 1987 and has spent nearly four decades correcting the most challenging color situations Washington has thrown at him. Every Master Stylist on our team has trained directly under him in the technical, careful, and patient craft of bringing color back to balance.

If you're here, you're probably stressed. Take a breath. We've got you.

What Is Color Correction?

Color correction is any color service designed to fix, neutralize, or transform an unwanted color result. It's a different category of service than a regular color appointment because it requires:

  • Diagnostic skill — understanding what's chemically on your hair right now

  • Custom formulation — building a corrective formula that may use multiple products, in stages

  • Patience — sometimes a full correction is best done across multiple visits to protect hair health

  • Honest expectations — being transparent about what's achievable in one session vs. what isn't

A regular color appointment adds color to your hair. A color correction strategically removes, neutralizes, or replacescolor that's already there. It's a more technical, more time-intensive service — and it's why the colorist matters more than ever.

Common Color Problems We Fix:

If any of these describe your hair right now, color correction is what you need:

Brassiness or unwanted warmth. Highlights or balayage that came out orange, yellow, or copper instead of the cool blonde or neutral tone you wanted.

Banding or harsh lines. Visible "stripes" or color demarcations between your roots, midlengths, and ends — usually from at-home color or repeated single-process applications.

Box-dye disasters. At-home color that went too dark, too red, too brassy, or won't lift out. Box dye can be especially difficult to correct because of the metallic dyes and high-volume developers it uses, but our colorists are trained for it.

Green or ashy tones. Often from chlorine, swimming, hard water, or an at-home toner that pulled too cool. Easy to fix when you know what you're doing.

Faded, dull, or mineral-built-up color. Color that's lost vibrancy from sun, wash buildup, or hard water.

Going lighter than your previous color. Lifting through previous color (especially dark or red color) is one of the most challenging color corrections — and one of the most rewarding when done well.

Going darker after years of highlights. Surprisingly tricky. Lightened hair often needs filling before it can hold a darker color evenly. Done wrong, it goes flat or muddy. Done right, it's beautiful.

Removing fantasy color. Vivid colors (blues, purples, pinks, reds) need a careful approach to remove without damaging the hair underneath.

Repeated salon disappointments. If you've been chasing a color from salon to salon and never quite gotten there, a correction with a Master Colorist is often the reset you need.

If you don't see your situation here, book a consultation anyway. After 40 years, there's not much we haven't seen.

How Color Correction Works at Kiss Salon

Every color correction starts with a complimentary consultation — and we encourage every new color correction client to book one before scheduling the actual service.

Here's why: a color correction quote depends entirely on what's currently on your hair, what condition it's in, and what your goal is. We'd rather meet you, examine your hair, talk through the history, and give you an honest, accurate plan than guess from photos online.

The consultation process:

Step 1: Hair history. We'll ask about every color service you've had in the last 1–2 years (or as far back as you can remember). Box color, salon color, glosses, toners, henna — everything matters.

Step 2: Strand analysis. Your colorist will examine your hair in natural light, check porosity, assess condition, and may take small test strands to see how your hair is responding chemically.

Step 3: Goal setting. We'll talk through what you want, what's realistic, and what may take more than one session. We're always honest. Sometimes the right answer is "yes, in one visit." Sometimes it's "yes, but in two." Sometimes it's "let's get partway there today and finish next month so we don't compromise your hair."

Step 4: Custom plan and quote. You'll leave the consultation with a clear plan, an accurate price quote, and a recommended timeline. No surprises.

If you're ready to move forward, we'll book your correction appointment. Most clients book the consultation and the appointment back-to-back when scheduling allows.

How Long Does Color Correction Take?

Color correction is a longer service than regular color. Plan for:

  • Simple corrections (toning out brassiness, refreshing faded color): 2–3 hours

  • Moderate corrections (lifting through old color, fixing banding): 3–5 hours

  • Major corrections (box-dye removal, dark to light, color reset): 4–8 hours, sometimes split across multiple visits

We always quote your time accurately at the consultation. If we think your correction is best done in stages, we'll explain why and lay out the schedule so you can plan accordingly.

Why Multiple Sessions Are Sometimes the Right Answer

Hair health is non-negotiable at Kiss Salon. There are situations — usually involving very dark previous color, repeated box dye, or a major shift from one extreme to another — where forcing a full correction in a single session would damage your hair beyond what's responsible.

When that's the case, we'll be honest with you about it. A great correction done across two visits is always better than a forced correction done in one that leaves your hair compromised. Our reputation is built on results that last — not just results that look good walking out the door that day.

If another salon told you something is impossible in one session, that may be true. If they said something is possible in one session and your hair didn't survive it well, that's the result of pushing past what your hair could safely take. Either way, we're glad you're here now.

Color Correction Pricing in Washington, DC

Color correction is always quoted at consultation, because every situation is different. As a general guide:

  • Simple corrections typically start around $300–$450

  • Moderate corrections typically range $450–$800

  • Major corrections can range $800–$2,000+, often split across multiple visits

These ranges reflect the time, products, and expertise required — not arbitrary pricing. A complex color correction may use multiple products in stages, take 6+ hours of a Master Colorist's time, and require highly specialized technique.

We provide a precise quote at your consultation. We never start a correction without you knowing the price first.

How to Prepare for Your Color Correction Consultation

To make the most of your consultation:

  • Come with clean, dry hair that hasn't been washed within the last 24 hours (this helps us see the true condition and tone)

  • Don't wear hats or pull hair back tightly before the appointment

  • Bring photos of the color you want (2–3 references)

  • Bring photos of the color you currently have if there's any unusual lighting at home that might be obscuring it

  • Bring a list (or screenshots) of every color service you've had in the last 1–2 years

  • Don't apply at-home toners or color between booking your consultation and the appointment — we need to see what's actually there

After Your Color Correction — What to Expect

A great color correction is the beginning of a healthier color relationship, not just a one-time service. After your correction:

  • Use sulfate-free, color-safe shampoo and conditioner. We recommend Oribe and Milbon — both available at the salon.

  • Wash less often. 2–3 times a week is plenty. Use dry shampoo between washes.

  • Wash with cool water. Especially in the first 1–2 weeks while your color settles.

  • Use a weekly hair mask. Corrected hair benefits from extra moisture and protein.

  • Always heat-protect. Use a heat protectant before any hot tool.

  • Schedule a gloss every 6–8 weeks to keep tone fresh and color vibrant.

  • Plan your next color appointment based on your stylist's recommendation. Some corrections require a follow-up visit; others can transition into a regular color schedule.

  • Don't go back to box dye. We say this with love.

You'll leave Kiss Salon with a custom home-care plan and a recommended schedule for keeping your color beautiful long-term.

Frequently Asked Questions About Color Correction

Can you fix my hair if I used box dye?

Almost certainly yes. Box dye is one of the most common color corrections we do. The exact approach depends on the brand, how recently it was applied, and how often it's been used over time — but our colorists are trained for it.

My hair turned orange/brassy after highlights — can you tone it?

Yes. Brassiness is often a quick fix with a custom toner or gloss. Book a consultation and we'll diagnose whether it's a toning issue or a deeper correction.

I want to go from very dark to blonde — can you do it in one session?

Sometimes, but often not safely. A consultation will tell us what's possible based on your hair's history and condition. Many dark-to-light transformations are best done across 2–3 sessions to protect your hair.

Can you fix color from another salon?

Absolutely — we do this every week. Bring as much information as you can about what was used, and we'll take it from there.

How much does color correction cost?

It varies widely based on the complexity. Simple toning can start around $300; major transformations can run $800–$2,000+, sometimes across multiple sessions. We always quote at consultation.

Will color correction damage my hair?

Not when done correctly. We use bonding additives in every lightening service, condition throughout, and finish with restorative treatments. If a correction would compromise your hair to do in one session, we'll recommend doing it in stages.

Do you offer free consultations?

Yes — complimentary color correction consultations. We strongly recommend booking one before scheduling the actual service so we can quote accurately and plan properly.

How soon can I get an appointment?

For consultations: usually within 1–2 weeks. For the correction itself: we recommend booking 2–4 weeks in advance, since corrections take significant time and we want to schedule properly.

Is it okay to wash my hair before the consultation?

Yes — we just ask you not wash within 24 hours of the appointment so we can see the true condition and tone of your hair.

Can you remove fantasy colors (pink, blue, purple)?

Yes, with care. Vivid colors require a specific removal approach to protect the hair underneath. Book a consultation and we'll create a plan.

Why Trust Kiss Salon With Your Color Correction

Color correction is the most technically demanding service in any salon. It rewards experience, training, and patience — and punishes shortcuts. Here's what makes Kiss Salon the right choice for it:

Nearly four decades of color expertise. Founder Jean Claude Macrez trained in France in 1987 and has been correcting color in Washington since 1994. There's almost no situation he hasn't seen.

A team trained in the same tradition. Every Master Stylist on our team has trained directly under Jean Claude in the French approach to color — including the technical specialty of correction.

The right products for the job. We work with the world's finest professional color and lightening lines (Goldwell, L'Oréal Professionnel, Redken) — not because they're prestigious, but because they give us the precision and gentleness corrections require.

Honest consultations. We'll tell you what's achievable in one session, what's not, and why. We'll never push you into a service that compromises your hair.

A long-term color relationship. Most color correction clients stay with us long after the correction is done. Once we get your color right, we keep it that way.

If you're nervous about trusting your hair to another salon after a bad experience, we understand. Come in for a consultation. There's no commitment, no pressure — just an honest conversation about what's possible.
